This March Break, artist Eric Kim will be offering his Manga Mondays classes as a one-week workshop for kids ages 10 to 14. Classes will run Monday to Friday (March 11th through 15th), followed by a book launch for the new creations produced in class on Sunday March 17th.

We are offering two timeslots: kids can either attend the morning classes (10am to 12pm) or the afternoon (1pm-3pm). Art materials and light snacks are provided.

We’re excited to invite 10- to 14-year-olds to enrol in local comics creator Eric Kim’s Manga Dojo art workshops, now in their second year. Starting January 21st, the Manga Dojo teaches students how to create and develop their own stories. In five sessions, students will create an anthology of their works and receive a physical copy of the book. They will learn about the fundamentals of storytelling, build upon their drawing skills, and develop an understanding of publishing.

Eric Kim is a professional comic artist and illustrator. His credits include Love as a Foreign Language, Degrassi: The Next Generation Vol. 3, Battle Academy, The Sidesteppers, Streta, and most recently, The Complete Plays of William Shakespeare. He has worked for numerous book and editorial clients across North America as well as Japan. His next book, Billy Smoke, will be coming from Oni Press later this year.

The fee for the course is $100 for five classes (materials included), a copy of the anthology produced by the class, as well as participation in a public book launch and gallery showing of the class’s work. The course runs weekly on Mondays from 4:30pm until 6pm, from January 21st through February 25th (no class on the holiday on Feb. 18th!). Simple snacks will be provided. The focus for this semester will be on story and story articulation. Students will prepare a publication and have work ready for the end of the term. Students will work on their own or in groups, and must have a work ready that they will be able to present.

Also, we’re doing our best to try and arrange for an open house showing of the work created by students over the past couple of years. If you are interested, please let me know, and I’ll do my best to try and figure out something for a summer showcase. Cheers!

Edit: Please note that the $320 cost is for students that were enrolled in the September to December session only. New students are required to pay full price.

The Basic class will meet for 12 weeks, starting September 16th and running to December 9th, with one break for the Thanksgiving weekend. Students will be learning to make comics, as well as the fundamental skills required to craft their own. A full PDF of the course outline is available here. The class takes place in Room 317a, except for October 14 and the 21, where it will be in Room 305.

The Advanced class will meet for 12 weeks, starting September 15th and running to December 8th, with one break for the Thanksgiving weekend. Students will be learning focusing on life drawing skills, refining both their observation and hand-eye skills. A full PDF of the course outline is available here. The class takes place in Room 304.

I can tell you personally that I will do a demonstration of markers, either in a demonstration or in a video.
